Bellway Wales raises record £77k for Cancer Research UK

Bellway Wales has achieved a record-breaking fundraising year for its chosen charity partner, Cancer Research UK, raising more than £77,000 over its latest 12-month financial period. This total marks the highest annual figure raised by the Cardiff-based housebuilder since it began partnering with the charity in 2016.

Staff events drive record total

Staff across the business organised and participated in a wide range of events to reach the historic sum. Activities included personal fitness challenges, dress-down days, and a major black-tie charity ball.

The largest contribution came from the Busson Ball, held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Cardiff, which raised £50,312. The event was organised in memory of former CRUK Wales Relationship Manager Sophie Busson, who died of cancer last year at the age of 39.

Memorial events and individual efforts

A further £11,061 was raised at the annual Hugh Thomas Memorial Golf Day, held at Radyr Golf Club in July. The tournament is held in memory of a colleague who died from the disease in 2022.

Development manager Simon Hughes organised several events, including two Cars & Coffee motoring meets that raised £4,950. He also hosted a pub quiz at the Black Lion Hotel in Llandaff, generating an additional £3,080 for the cause.

Trainee assistant site manager Evie Denbury raised £1,800 by completing a 5k Pretty Mudder obstacle course in Bute Park. Staff also contributed £2,328 throughout the year through weekly Dress Down Friday events at work.

Leadership response and future outlook

Daniel Shone, head of sales at Bellway Wales, said: “This record-breaking fundraising tally is the result of a fantastic collective effort by colleagues from across the Wales division and I’m proud of everyone for doing their bit for such a deserving cause.

“Cancer Research UK is a charity which means an awful lot to us at Bellway Wales. The loss of much-loved colleague in Hugh and inspiring charity partner in Sophie, both to cancer, has only strengthened our determination to raise as much money as we can to help beat this dreadful disease, as shown by the two wonderful events held in their memory.

“I’d like to thank all Bellway Wales colleagues for organising, supporting or taking part in the various fundraising events which contributed to the overall total and look forward to another successful year of fundraising over the next 12 months.”

The record total underscores the division’s commitment to supporting Cancer Research UK, and staff are already preparing for another year of fundraising activities across the Wales division.
