Leicester's Big Sleep Event Generates Over £7,000 for Homelessness Support
In a powerful display of community solidarity, generous supporters have raised more than £7,000 at this year's 'The Big Sleep' event, dedicated to assisting guests of The Bridge Homelessness to Hope charity. The annual fundraising initiative invited participants to sleep outside for one night, aiming to raise both money and awareness about the challenges faced by the city's homeless and rough sleepers.
Event Details and Participation
Held at the University of Leicester's Centenary Square, the event took place overnight from 8pm on Tuesday, March 17, to 6am the following morning. Sixteen individuals participated, including a team from Heidelberg Materials, a leading supplier of heavy building materials to the construction industry. The Bridge Homelessness to Hope staff contributed £2,165, with volunteer Clive Henkel raising £1,086, while the Heidelberg team added £1,097 to the total.
Corporate and Community Support
Jops Hill, social value & FAIR co-ordinator at Heidelberg Materials UK, expressed the company's ongoing commitment: "We've supported The Big Sleep for three years now, and every time we walk away with the same quiet reflection, the gratitude of returning to loved ones and the privilege of a safe space. One night outdoors doesn't compare to the reality of homelessness, but it reminds us why this cause matters." He emphasized their dedication to using their platform to support meaningful change, highlighting hope as a means to dignity, stability, and rebuilding lives.
Dupli, a leading supplier of photographic printing equipment, sponsored the event for the fifth consecutive year. A spokesperson noted: "For the fifth straight year, Dupli are pleased to be able to support The Big Sleep 2026 in aid of The Bridge Homelessness to Hope charity. The work that The Bridge Homelessness to Hope continues to carry out in the local community offers the dream of a more hopeful future in the face of what might seem like a never-ending nightmare."
Impact of Funds Raised
All funds from The Big Sleep will support The Bridge Homelessness to Hope's vital services, including breakfast and lunch provisions, access to hot showers, clothing, toiletries, and laundry facilities. Additionally, the money will fund three Case Workers who assist guests with housing and benefit advice, connections to GPs or dentists, and access to mental health and wellbeing support.
Personal Reflections from Participants
Kean Folley, a case worker at The Bridge Homelessness to Hope, shared his experience: "Spending a night sleeping outside for charity was, for me, an overwhelmingly positive experience. There was a real sense of community, people coming together from different backgrounds, united by a shared purpose." He clarified that while the event fostered reflection and understanding, it did not replicate the harsh realities of homelessness, which often involve uncertainty, vulnerability, and long-term hardship without safety or choice.
Folley added: "Our night outside was never intended to replicate that reality, and it couldn't. Instead, it served as a small window, an opportunity to reflect, to listen, and to better understand the importance of the work being done by charities and organisations supporting people experiencing homelessness."
Call to Action
There is still time to support The Big Sleep participants by sponsoring the event, with all contributions directly benefiting homelessness services in Leicester. This initiative underscores the ongoing need for community engagement and support to address homelessness effectively.
