Six men have admitted their roles in the fireworks disorder that erupted in Birmingham city centre on Halloween night 2023, prompting a strong condemnation from West Midlands Police.
At the time of the incident on October 31, 2023, fireworks were dangerously launched towards people, buildings and officers on Bagot Street and Staniforth Street, the force stated. A number of people were subsequently arrested as police described the behaviour as 'deplorable'.
Charges and Change of Plea
The six defendants originally faced a charge of violent disorder: Ulrich Angwe, 22, from London, and George Dandison, 22, Iqram Khan, 25, Sheryar Khan, 24, Zain Mahmood, 27, and Ajay Penfold, 22, all from Birmingham.
All six denied the more serious offence and were set to go on trial at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday (September 1) before they each admitted the lesser charge of affray. Prosecutor Sarah Slater confirmed the pleas were acceptable to resolve the case.
Sentencing Date Set
Judge Samantha Crabb addressed the group directly, stating: "All of you have pleaded guilty to affray for which you will be sentenced on the 3rd of December, which is the first date the court can accommodate."
She added: "I also adjourn in respect of all of you for the preparation of pre-sentence reports."
Bail and Custody Arrangements
Sheryar Khan is already a serving prisoner in relation to another conviction and was remanded in custody, while the other five men were allowed to remain on unconditional bail pending sentencing.
