Birmingham charity SIFA Fireside has issued a stark warning that support for the city's homeless is drying up as summer donations fall, leaving vulnerable people exposed to the full force of the elements. The Digbeth-based organisation, which supports rough sleepers and those in recovery from homelessness, is calling on the public to help bridge the gap.
Critical Summer Shortfall
While summer brings warmer weather, it also brings a significant drop in donations, according to the charity. This comes at a time when the need for support remains constant, with vulnerable individuals facing challenges from extreme heat as well as the usual hardships of life on the streets.
SIFA Fireside is reviving its 'Homelessness Doesn't Take A Holiday' campaign to highlight the ongoing need and encourage donations. The campaign features postcards with slogans like 'Wish I wasn't here...' to remind the public that homelessness persists year-round.
Vital Services at Risk
The charity's Support Centre serves as a central hub for adults without a place to call home, offering a range of crucial services. These include health clinics, financial planning support, housing advice, and a listening ear. The centre also provides a 'care of' address, allowing those without permanent residence to receive important post such as birth certificates.
Hot meals are served daily, and guests can access showers, fresh clothes, and laundry facilities. For days when the centre is closed, rough sleeping kits are distributed to help people cope.
Impact on the Community
Keeping the Support Centre operational costs approximately £1.7 million each year. In June alone, the charity's Homeless Intervention Team supported 453 individuals across Birmingham, demonstrating the scale of need.
Robb Sheppard, head of fundraising, communications and volunteering at SIFA Fireside, said: "Our donations dry up each summer while vulnerable people in Birmingham still need support. We are asking whoever is able to help us out with this campaign by donating and helping us spread the word. Together, we can make sure that every adult in Birmingham can face a future without homelessness."
