Corey Gartside, a 20-year-old from Birmingham, has completed a 25-kilometre Ultra Challenge along the Yorkshire coast to raise funds for Young Lives VS Cancer, the charity that supported him through his own cancer diagnosis.
Diagnosis and Treatment
In early 2025, Gartside was diagnosed with germinoma, a type of germ cell tumour that forms in the brain and is most common among children, teenagers, and young adults. He underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy following life-saving surgery and is now in remission.
The Challenge
The North Yorks Ultra Challenge, a brand-new event held in June, saw participants tackle various routes along the coastline between Scarborough and Whitby. Ultra Challenge events are popular fundraising activities across the UK, with recent editions raising as much as £1.3 million.
Why He Fundraised
Gartside raised money for Young Lives VS Cancer, which provided him with emotional support, petrol payments for travel to Manchester for treatment, and help finding income while he was unable to work. He said: “Without this charity, last year would’ve been a whole lot tougher which is why I’m trying to raise money for them to help others.”
Experience and Gratitude
Despite never having done such an event before, Gartside felt ready and enjoyed the day. His fundraiser has reached nearly £500, and he expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him. Donations can be made via the North Yorks charity walk page for Young Lives VS Cancer.
Ultra Challenge Series
