Bridgend teen Harvey Doak named Contact Award finalist

Teen's Inspiring Spirit Earns Prestigious Award Nomination

A remarkable 13-year-old boy from Bridgend has been shortlisted for a major national award, celebrating his incredible positivity and strength while living with a serious medical condition. Harvey Doak has been named a finalist in the Contact Awards, specifically in the Proudest Moment Award category.

A Mother's Pride and a Youngster's Courage

Harvey lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is unable to walk without assistance. His mother, Kirstie Doak, who nominated him, revealed the family is currently facing homelessness. Despite these profound challenges, Harvey's spirit remains unbroken.

"At the moment we are homeless, but despite this, he still goes to school with a big smile on his face and has embraced the changes that his condition brings as it progresses," Kirstie said. She added that his determination shines through his academic life, where he has become head of his form and managed to keep up with top performers despite missing significant school time for hospital appointments.

A Celebration of Resilience at the House of Lords

Harvey is one of only 18 finalists across six categories who have been invited to a special awards ceremony. This prestigious event will be held at the House of Lords in London on Monday, November 24. The ceremony will be hosted by broadcaster Jane Garvey, where the winners will be officially announced.

The Contact Awards are organised by the national charity Contact and are dedicated to honouring the love, resilience, and often unseen achievements of families with disabled children across the UK. The Proudest Moment category specifically highlights young people who inspire their families and communities through their strength and achievements.

Anna Bird, CEO of Contact, expressed her admiration, stating: "I was truly touched to learn about Harvey — his strength, his spirit, and the pride he brings to his mum every day. Behind every nomination is a story of quiet courage and everyday heroism, and we’re honoured to share those stories through our awards."
