Brookenby Man's 50-Mile Charity Cycle for Parkinson's UK

A 68-year-old resident from Brookenby is embarking on a remarkable 50-mile charity cycle ride on his tricycle, traveling from Brookenby to Lincoln Bailgate to raise funds for Parkinson's UK. Dirk Terjung, aged 68, aims to collect £1,000 to support the charity's crucial efforts in research and patient care.

Dirk's Inspiring Journey

Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2020 and later with osteopenia, which caused three compressed fractures in his spine, Dirk has overcome significant health challenges. He will start his journey at 8 a.m. from Brookenby and plans to arrive at 11 p.m. at the Parkinson's Bailgate Drop-in Café, located in the Methodist Church in Lincoln Bailgate. This support group meets every second Wednesday, offering free attendance with no booking required, providing information, support, and informal chats over a cup of tea for local individuals impacted by Parkinson's.

Return Journey and Fundraising Goals

After a short break at the café, Dirk will attempt the return trip, making his total ride an impressive 100 miles round trip. He decided to fundraise for Parkinson's UK to help develop better treatments and ultimately find a cure for the condition. Parkinson's is a complex brain disorder that progressively worsens over time, with over 40 symptoms ranging from tremors and pain to anxiety. It is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally, affecting approximately 153,000 people in the UK, and currently has no cure.

Support from Parkinson's UK

Parkinson's UK is dedicated to supporting every individual's journey with the disease, offering resources and a confidential helpline at 0808 800 0303. Dirk expressed his gratitude, stating, "After being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and Osteopenia, the road to recovery from being bed-bound to cycling 50 miles was only possible with the network of support received through Parkinson's UK. A cure is not in sight yet, and more research is required. The money raised will go towards research into Parkinson's Disease."

Community Fundraising Leaders Respond

Kirsty Berrigan and Rebecca Landolt, heads of community fundraising at Parkinson's UK, shared their appreciation: "We are so grateful to Dirk for taking on this incredible challenge for Parkinson's UK. With more than 40 potential symptoms, Parkinson's can devastate lives. We've made huge breakthroughs in the last 50 years, but there is still no cure and current treatments are not good enough. We hope that Dirk's fundraising challenge inspires you to get involved with Parkinson's UK. There are lots of ways for you to support us, from volunteering at events to campaigning for better services. Without the generosity of people like you, our work would not be possible."
