Brothers raise £14k with 40-mile epilepsy walk

Two brothers from New Hall School in Chelmsford completed a 40-mile fundraising walk to Great Ormond Street Hospital on June 20, raising more than £14,000 for Epilepsy Action and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. The challenge was inspired by Leo Walsh's epilepsy diagnosis, brain tumour surgery, and recovery over the past 18 months.

Leo's health battle and the walk

Leo, in Year 8, suffered a major seizure caused by a brain tumour in December 2024. After months of specialist care, he underwent surgery to remove the tumour exactly one year after his first seizure. His brother Henry, Year 10, joined him on the walk from Little Baddow to the London hospital. The family took on the challenge to thank the organisations that supported them.

Epilepsy affects about 1% of people in the UK, causing frequent seizures. The family hopes the funds will help other children access life-changing care.

School and family praise

Katherine Jeffrey, principal of New Hall School, said: "We are incredibly proud of Leo and Henry for completing this inspiring challenge. Their determination is truly commendable." She added that turning a difficult personal experience into an opportunity to support others reflects great compassion, and congratulated them on their remarkable accomplishment.

Mum Lucy Walsh described the walk as an incredibly emotional experience that celebrated how far Leo has come. She said: "When they first planned the challenge, we never imagined he would take part, but he completed the entire walk just six months after brain surgery. It was a wonderful way to mark this milestone while also saying thank you to everyone who supported us through one of the most difficult periods of our lives."

Gratitude and ongoing support

Lucy thanked Epilepsy Action for their guidance and Great Ormond Street Hospital for their incredible care. She hopes the money raised will make a difference to other families and encourage a better understanding of the condition. Donations can still be made via Leo's GoFundMe page.
