Twenty retailers from Castle Court Shopping Centre in Caerphilly have raised more than £1,000 for Wales Air Ambulance by covering 1,115 miles in July. The team walked, ran, paddled, and cycled daily, doubling their initial target of 620 miles. The fundraiser was coordinated by Centre Manager Hannah Clark, who praised the community spirit and the centre's connection to the lifesaving charity.
Daily Fitness Challenge Inspires Team
The challenge began as a way to support Wales Air Ambulance, a charity that brings hospital-standard care to people in critical emergencies. The team tracked their progress using the Strava app and stayed motivated through a WhatsApp group. Hannah Clark noted that the event became competitive but uplifting, with some tenants aiming to get fit and lose weight, while others wanted to start healthy habits.
Despite hot weather and some participants who had not exercised for years, the team persevered. Clark highlighted the mental health benefits, saying that getting outdoors daily was transformative for those struggling with their wellbeing. The challenge has evolved into a lasting fitness club, with potential plans for a 5k or half-marathon.
Community and Charity Connection
Castle Court Shopping Centre, located next to Caerphilly Castle, attracts an average of 123,000 visitors per month. The centre has a bandstand for performances and hosts fundraisers for local clubs and charities. The team nominated Wales Air Ambulance because the helicopter often lands near the centre during serious medical emergencies, making it a cause close to their hearts.
Hannah Clark expressed pride in the team's achievement, noting that the centre fundraises for two charities each year. She emphasized the importance of the air ambulance service, as many people in the community know someone who has benefited from it.
Charity Grateful for Donation
Christian Sullivan from Wales Air Ambulance thanked the Castle Court team for their efforts. He praised the creation of a fitness club inspired by the 'mile a day' challenge and acknowledged the significant contribution. Sullivan stated that every pound raised makes a lifesaving difference, ensuring the service can continue to be there for the people of Wales whenever and wherever needed.
The fundraiser raised over £1,000, and the team's dedication has strengthened community bonds and promoted healthier lifestyles. The success may lead to future challenges, as the team considers participating in longer events.
