Neil Coates, a 49-year-old from Weardale, County Durham, is marking his 50th birthday with a 150-mile charity walk from Stanhope to Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium to raise funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. The trek begins on Thursday, 16 July, and is expected to take around nine days.
From Bluebird Boutique to Murrayfield
Setting off from his family's business, Bluebird Boutique in Stanhope, Neil will be accompanied by his wife of 20 years, Rebecca. The couple have two children, Ethan (22) and Finley (17), and a 12-year-old cockatoo named Poppy. Neither Neil nor Rebecca has served in the Armed Forces, but they have close friends across all three services, giving them insight into the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life.
A Personal Challenge with a Purpose
Neil explained his motivation: “As I get closer to turning 50, I wanted to do something memorable. The more we talked about it, the more we wanted some sort of challenge to support a charity that makes a real difference. We’ve seen first-hand some of the difficulties veterans can face after leaving the Armed Forces, so raising money for SSAFA felt like the right thing to do.”
To kick-start fundraising, Neil organized a nine-mile circular sponsored walk from a local pub in Frosterley, inviting friends and supporters. The couple has set a fundraising target of £1,000 for SSAFA.
More Than Just a Walk
Neil added: “This challenge is about much more than reaching Edinburgh. It’s about getting fitter, spending time outdoors and, most importantly, helping a charity that supports people who have served our country and their families. If we can raise awareness of SSAFA while raising some money at the same time, that’ll make every mile worthwhile.”
SSAFA has supported the Armed Forces community for 140 years, providing practical, emotional, and financial assistance to serving personnel, veterans, and their families.
