Couple to Trek 500 Miles on Camino de Santiago for Urology Charity

Jenny and Tim Kitchell, a wife and husband from St Davids, are gearing up for an extraordinary challenge: walking the historic Camino de Santiago to raise vital funds for Carmarthenshire Urology Services at Hywel Dda University Health Board. The couple will embark on a 500-mile trek over 35 days, starting from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the Basque country on May 27 and concluding at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela on June 30.

Inspired by Personal Experience

Jenny was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2024 and has since been receiving treatment from the Urology team at Glangwili Hospital. This personal journey has motivated her to take on this demanding pilgrimage as a way to give back. She expressed her gratitude, stating, "I have been treated by the staff of the Urology department based at Glangwili since my diagnosis. I feel humbled by the sheer energy, expertise and kindness of everyone who has worked to make me better. The very least I can do in return is to try and raise money for the department to help with the astounding work they do."

Jenny added, "Tim and I have planned to go on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, whose cathedral was dedicated as a place of pilgrimage in 1122 at the same time as the cathedral at St Davids, where I’ve worked for many years." This connection adds a deeper historical and personal significance to their journey.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts

Claire Rumble, the fundraising officer, commented on the initiative, saying, "We are deeply moved by Jenny’s story and her wish to give something back after her cancer treatment. The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive."

The fundraiser aims to support local NHS patients and staff, with donations contributing to enhanced urology services in the region. Supporters are encouraged to contribute to this noble cause, with all proceeds going directly to benefit the Urology department and its patients.
