The HUUB Sportive in Derbyshire has raised £3,250 for Safe and Sound, a charity supporting families affected by exploitation, with a cyclist who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident contributing £1,380 of that total.
Paul, whose surname was not provided, completed his longest ride since the crash three years ago, using an adapted trike during the event. He took on the challenge to raise funds for Safe and Sound, where his wife volunteers.
Paul's longest ride since accident
Paul said: “They do amazing work and I wanted to support a local charity. It’s the longest distance I’ve cycled, and the event was well organised. I will be back next year for the 100k!”
He was one of 120 adult cyclists who took part in the main HUUB Sportive, which brought together cyclists, businesses, families, volunteers and community organisations for a day of cycling and fundraising.
Junior ride and coaching sessions
The event also encouraged the next generation to get on two wheels, with 40 young people and their families completing an eight-mile junior ride from Pride Park to Elvaston Castle and back.
Cycle Derby also hosted coaching sessions for nine children, helping two beginners learn how to ride by the end of the day.
Charity impact and support
Tracy Harrison, from Safe and Sound, said: “Paul’s achievement was one of the real highlights of an incredible day. The whole event demonstrated what can happen when people come together.”
The event was delivered with the support of a wide range of local organisations and partners, alongside Safe and Sound staff, ambassadors and volunteers. The money raised will go towards the work of Safe and Sound and The Jono Hornblow Trust, which supports children, young people and families affected by exploitation across Derby and Derbyshire.
