The Kingsway pub in Derby has raised £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support following a weekend of community activities. More than 500 people visited the venue to take part in family entertainment and fundraising efforts, as part of a national summer initiative encouraging pub teams to support local causes.
Weekend of fundraising events
Celebrations at The Kingsway included live music, family activities, and a special bike ride to generate donations. The event was held in memory of Ellen Hill, a much-loved regular customer who passed away 10 years ago. Her son, Luke Hill, continues to visit the venue, making the cause deeply personal for staff and locals.
Brett Hill, operator at The Kingsway, said: "Supporting Macmillan Cancer Support in Ellen's memory meant a great deal to all of us. Ellen was a valued regular at the pub and it's been wonderful to see the local community continue to support a cause that remains so close to Luke and his family."
Community support exceeds expectations
Hill added: "I'm incredibly proud of my team and the way they handled two extremely busy days. The turnout exceeded our expectations and seeing the support from our customers and the wider community made all the hard work worthwhile."
The money raised will help fund specialist nurses and support services for people living with cancer. The event is part of a broader national effort by pubs to contribute to local charities and causes.
