Hollie, a 35-year-old single mother and outreach education worker from Derbyshire, completed the 13.1-mile Ramathon course in Chesterfield on Sunday, raising hundreds of pounds for The Elm Foundation, a local domestic abuse charity. The funds will be used to renovate secure refuge gardens for families who have fled violence and danger.
From running novice to half-marathon finisher in months
Hollie only began running in October of last year. Initially, she signed up for a 10-kilometre race on Mother's Day after a conversation with fellow school mothers. However, her training was heavily disrupted by family commitments and moving house, forcing her to practice with a running buggy. Despite these challenges, she decided to tackle the longer half-marathon distance.
Personal motivation and cause close to heart
“I wanted to prove to myself and my girls that I can do hard things,” said Hollie. “Supporting people affected by domestic abuse is something that means a great deal to me.” Crossing the finish line, she reflected: “It wasn't just about completing 13.1 miles. It was a reminder of how far I've come, both physically and mentally.”
Race day conditions and family support
Despite the rain, Hollie felt a sense of relief: “I know that sounds strange, but by that point I was so hot that the rain was such a welcome relief.” After the race, her daughters “cuddled me and told me how proud they were.”
Impact of fundraising on refuge gardens
Hollie hopes the renovated gardens will provide a safe haven: “I hope these gardens become a place where you can take a deep breath, find a little peace and begin to look forward with hope. I hope they become a place where children can laugh and play and where families can make new, happy memories together.” The Elm Foundation supports victims of domestic abuse across Derbyshire.
