Labradoodle Nora Joins Pilgrimage to Raise Funds for East Cheshire Hospice
Dog Nora Joins Pilgrimage for East Cheshire Hospice

A three-year-old labradoodle named Nora is accustomed to leisurely daily walks, but later this month, she will face her most significant challenge yet. Nora is set to join her owner, John McKay, and his friend Peter Henshaw on a six-day pilgrimage along St Oswald's Way in Northumbria, aiming to raise funds for East Cheshire Hospice.

John McKay's Connection to the Hospice

John McKay served as a doctor at East Cheshire Hospice from 2007 to 2011, bringing a deep personal connection to this fundraising effort. He retired six months ago after a 34-year medical career, with his last 11 years spent at Macclesfield District General Hospital, where he now works as a chaplain twice a week. John expressed strong support for the hospice, recalling how well they cared for both staff and patients.

"I remember how well they looked after the staff as well as patients, and the patients were very well looked after," John said. "They're a dedicated and thoughtful team. I learned a lot there and I applied the same principles from the Hospice across my work in nursing homes."

Preparing for the Pilgrimage

To prepare for the 97-mile trek, John and Nora recently completed a 38-mile hike on the Gritstone Trail. John noted that Nora handled the distance better than he did, describing her as "quite chipper" and happy during the walk. He admitted that the upcoming Northumbria challenge will be a big test, as it's the furthest he has ever walked.

The Pilgrimage Details

The pilgrimage traces the footsteps of St Oswald, an Anglo-Saxon king who played a key role in introducing Christianity to England. Starting at Heavenfield near Hadrian's Wall, the route traverses moorland and coastal areas, ending on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. This spiritual journey is not just about the destination but the experience along the way.

Peter Henshaw's Perspective

Peter Henshaw, who will accompany John and Nora, has prior experience with long-distance walks. Last September, he walked 207 miles from his home in Macclesfield to Walsingham, a medieval pilgrimage site in Norfolk. For Peter, walking offers an escape from daily life and a chance for spiritual reflection.

"Walking is the ultimate escape," Peter said. "You get up, eat breakfast, and don't have to think about anything other than reaching the next place. I enjoy the peace and quiet and don't look at any news or TV for a few days. Spiritually, it allows you to listen to God better, and on any pilgrimage, the journey is as much a part as the destination."

Community and Faith Connections

John serves as a Deacon at St Philip's and St Peter's Catholic Churches in Stockport, where Peter is part of the congregation. Peter also attends St Alban's in Macclesfield, highlighting their shared faith and community ties. This pilgrimage combines their personal interests with a charitable cause close to John's heart.

Fundraising Efforts

The trio's fundraising walk supports East Cheshire Hospice, an organization that has benefited from various community efforts in the past. To sponsor John, Peter, and Nora, donations can be made through their JustGiving page. This event adds to a legacy of support for the hospice, including previous fundraisers like the Starlight Walk and choir performances that have raised significant sums.
