Dorset Father to Push Daughter in London Marathon for Muscular Dystrophy UK
A devoted father from Dorset is making his daughter's lifelong dream come true by participating in this year's TCS London Marathon with a specialist running wheelchair. The team, known as 'Kiera and her Chauffeurs,' is supporting Muscular Dystrophy UK, a leading charity that aids over 110,000 individuals in the UK affected by more than 60 muscle-wasting conditions. Their goal is to raise an impressive £10,000 to fund vital research and support services.
Family Unites for a Cause
Robert Santry, a 47-year-old father of three from Bournemouth, Dorset, will be at the forefront of this effort, supporting his eldest daughter, Kiera Santry, aged 30. Kiera lives with a rare form of limb girdle muscular dystrophy, diagnosed when she was just nine years old. She transitioned to using a wheelchair at age 18 and never imagined she could participate in the iconic London Marathon. Thanks to Muscular Dystrophy UK, her dream has become a reality, showcasing the power of community and determination.
Joining Robert and Kiera in this challenge are her husband, Andrew Norman, 34, her younger sister Georgia Santry, 27, and Georgia's partner, David Burke, 26. Together, they will tackle the 26.2-mile course alongside more than 50,000 runners, creating a memorable family milestone.
Overcoming Challenges with Pride
Robert shared heartfelt insights into their journey, stating, "Kiera's condition is so rare they've not been able to fully diagnose the type yet. It affects every aspect of her life. Before her diagnosis, she was a child who never sat still, obsessed with gymnastics and sports. We were blissfully unaware of what her future would hold." He emphasized the critical role of Muscular Dystrophy UK, noting, "They fund groundbreaking research and provide life-changing support. They've been there every step of the way for our family, from Kiera's diagnosis to now. I couldn't think of a more worthwhile charity to raise money for."
Expressing his pride, Robert added, "As a father, I'm incredibly proud of all my children. With Kiera, we've watched her defy the odds no matter what life throws at her. To run by her side at the London Marathon is a marvellous milestone for her and our family. I couldn't be prouder."
Embracing Life and New Opportunities
Kiera, who resides in London with her husband Andrew, reflected on her personal growth, saying, "For years after my diagnosis, I resented my condition and faced dark times as I navigated my new life. Now, I've reached a point where I accept my situation and embrace life fully. I try to make the most of every moment and opportunity."
She expressed excitement about the marathon, stating, "Taking part in this year's TCS London Marathon is me doing exactly that... and I can't wait! Living with a life-limiting condition, I never thought this day would come—it's beyond my wildest dreams. After years of working in fundraising at Muscular Dystrophy UK, including on events like the London Marathon, I'm finally getting to experience it as a participant!"
The TCS London Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, promising to be an inspiring event for all involved. This story highlights the resilience of individuals facing muscle-wasting conditions and the unwavering support of their loved ones.
