Former Great Britain decathlete Alex Gibson has been awarded an MBE by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal for his extraordinary fundraising efforts that have raised more than £1.2 million to support people living with motor neurone disease (MND).
Diagnosis turned into mission
Diagnosed with MND in 2018, Gibson transformed his diagnosis into a mission to help others. He founded the charity Challenging MND, which provides grants, equipment, and practical support for MND warriors and their families across the UK. Since his diagnosis, Gibson has completed 21 endurance challenges that defy the physical limitations of the disease.
Remarkable challenges
Among his most notable feats is a 24-hour Boxathon, where he completed 50 two-minute rounds on a punch bag over a full day, supported by a team that kept the bag moving between rounds. In 2025, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition by completing the TCS London Marathon. Most recently, he finished the Great Glen Canoe Expedition in Scotland, a 92km canoe journey over five days.
Impact and recognition
Gibson’s fundraising has directly supported families living with the terminal condition. He said: “When I was diagnosed with MND, being awarded an MBE by Princess Anne was certainly not something I imagined would happen eight years later. I feel this honour isn’t just a recognition of me, but a recognition of everyone who has been affected by MND.” He hopes to spark conversations that raise awareness for those living with MND and their families.
The Brentwood and wider Essex community has played a key role in Challenging MND’s fundraising. Long-standing supporter Aston Bevans-Royston said: “It’s impossible to put into words just how inspiring Alex is. Despite living with motor neurone disease, he refuses to let it define him. Through Challenging MND, he has given hope to so many people while taking on extraordinary challenges that most of us would struggle to complete.”
Future focus
Despite the honour, Gibson remains focused on the work ahead. Through Challenging MND, he and his team will continue raising awareness and funding vital support for MND warriors and their families.
