SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has announced that Graham Meacher, former Branch Chair of SSAFA Fife, has been awarded the prestigious Sir James Gildea Global Award in recognition of more than 25 years of dedicated voluntary service to the Armed Forces community. The honour was presented during SSAFA's Annual General Meeting at London's Victory Services Club.
This year's award carried a historic touch: it was handed over by two descendants of SSAFA founder Sir James Gildea – Edward Gildea and David Santa-Olalla DSO MC. The Global Award celebrates extraordinary individuals who go above and beyond to support military veterans and their families.

A military career that laid the foundations
Born in Edinburgh, Graham has been a resident of Fife since 1963. His connection to the Armed Forces runs deep. He joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1971 and was commissioned in 1980. During his distinguished career, he served in West Germany and later in a unified Germany, at SHAPE in Belgium, across the UK, and on short overseas deployments. His commitment was recognised in 1994 when he was awarded an MBE for services to the Ministry of Defence. He retired early as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2000.
That same year, Graham began volunteering with SSAFA as a caseworker. What started as a way to channel his experience and compassion into a new chapter quickly became a two-and-a-half-decade commitment to improving the lives of veterans and their families in Fife and beyond.
More than a quarter of a century of volunteering
Over the past 25 years, Graham has taken on a wide range of roles within SSAFA. He has served as caseworker, fundraising and awareness officer, Branch Vice-Chair, Branch Chair, Regional Chair, and Convenor of the Scottish Resource Committee. In each of these roles, he has worked to ensure that veterans, serving personnel, and their families receive the practical and emotional support they deserve.
Reflecting on his volunteering journey, Graham said: “I was in tune with the ethos of SSAFA and enjoyed meeting and helping clients, plus working with like-minded colleagues, and found it very satisfying being able to make a real and immediate difference to the lives of veterans and their families.”
Making a real difference in times of crisis
One example of the impact of Graham's work involves the family of an RAF veteran. Their daughter, who was undergoing RAF training, was diagnosed with cancer and received specialist treatment in the Military Wing of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The SSAFA Fife branch, with Graham's involvement, provided crucial support: arranging accommodation at SSAFA's Norton House, facilitating travel to and from Fife, and offering other assistance to help the family stay close to their daughter during her treatment.
Stories like this illustrate why Graham's dedication has been recognised with the Sir James Gildea Global Award. The award is a testament to the difference one person can make through sustained, committed volunteering.

Graham expressed his delight at the honour: “This award came as a most pleasant surprise to me, and I was delighted to be nominated for it by colleagues, which perhaps makes it all the more meaningful an achievement.”
