Adam Roe, 40, from Lavendon, Milton Keynes, is set to tackle the Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge 2026 on July 18 and 19 to raise funds for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. His decision comes after his wife, Vicky, suffered a life-threatening caesarean-scar ectopic pregnancy in 2023, which required emergency surgery.
A Harrowing Experience
During Vicky's operation, Adam spent the night pacing hospital corridors with their daughter, uncertain if she would survive. When the surgeon finally confirmed Vicky was safe, the relief was overwhelming. In the aftermath, The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust provided crucial information and emotional support, helping the family navigate the trauma.
Adam said: "I'm doing this for Vicky, for Baby Roe, and for every family who has been through the trauma of ectopic pregnancy. If this challenge and fundraiser helps even one person feel less alone, then every mile will be worth it."
The Challenge Details
The Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge is a continuous 100-kilometer day-and-night trek across rugged coastline and steep climbs in South Wales. Over 1,500 participants are signed up, with the event already raising £200,000 across all fundraisers. Participants receive full support, including hot food, regular rest stops, and an experienced welfare team. Optional camping and accommodation are available to make the event accessible.
Impact of Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy affects approximately 1 in 80 pregnancies in the UK. Munira Oza, chief executive of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, said: "People like Adam are the heartbeat of everything we do. Taking on the Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge 2026 is no small feat, and the fact that he is doing it in support of those affected by ectopic pregnancy means the world to us." The funds raised help keep the trust's support, information, and resources free for those in need.
Training and Previous Experience
This will be Adam's second 100km ultra, having previously completed the Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge. He currently covers around 45km per week in training, with additional elevation work to prepare for the tough Gower terrain. To donate to Adam's fundraiser, visit www.justgiving.com/page/adam-roe.
