King's Lynn Couple Wins National Oddfellows Award

A married couple from King's Lynn have been honoured with a national award for their kindness and commitment to running a local not-for-profit friendship group. Roger and Susan Williamson, members of the King's Lynn Oddfellows, received the 2026 Making a Difference Award for 'Achieving Together', recognising their dedication to the branch and the society.

Unexpected Recognition

Roger, 83, a retired timber buyer, serves as a trustee and committee member for King's Lynn Oddfellows, helping to shape the branch's future and ensure members' voices are heard. He also organises and hosts social events like quizzes and bingo. Initially skeptical when notified on April 1st, he said: 'I thought it was a joke... But when I realised it was real, I was very pleased and humbled. I didn't see it coming.' Susan, 82, also on the committee, volunteers in the kitchen at events. She remarked: 'I couldn't believe it... we're only doing what anybody else would do.'

Branch and Wider Network

King's Lynn Oddfellows is one of 91 branches in the Oddfellows' nationwide network, one of the UK's oldest and largest friendly societies. The branch has over 350 mostly older and retired local members. Branch secretary Alison Schultz praised the couple: 'There are no more deserving winners... they make a wonderful team and we're so grateful for their selflessness.'

Impact and Community

The award highlights the couple's teamwork and compassion. Roger noted: 'We don't do it for a trophy, but it's nice when you're recognised.' Susan added: 'To win the award together is special too.' The Oddfellows aims to improve members' lives through friendship and support, offering events, care, welfare support, and a travel club. New members are welcome, and volunteering opportunities exist.
