The arrival of spring has brought warmer weather and blossoming flowers to Leeds, but many young families remain trapped inside their homes. A shortage of affordable prams means some parents are finding it nearly impossible to leave their houses with their babies. Leeds Baby Bank is now urgently appealing to the community to help get these families moving again.
Why Prams Are Essential
Sarah from Leeds Baby Bank explains, "We know that a pram is crucial to the wellbeing of young children—and also their parents. If you are stuck in the house, how can you get to medical appointments, meet with friends and family for support, or even get some fresh air?" The charity works tirelessly to ensure that no child in our city has to go without essential items due to poverty.
How the Charity Operates
When a health professional refers a family, the team prepares a special bundle that includes clothes, high chairs, and Moses baskets. Currently, there are 32 families on the waiting list for prams that are suitable from birth. Sarah adds, "Today we have 32 families on our waiting list for prams or pushchairs which are suitable from birth. Eight of them are for babies that are already here! We are asking everyone to raid their garages, sheds, hallways, and spare rooms for prams they no longer need."
Community Response
One local dad named Richard has already stepped up by donating the pram his daughters, Hazel and Nina, used when they were little. The two girls were happy to wave goodbye to their old wheels so another baby could enjoy them. If you have a clean and working pram, you can drop it off at the charity’s unit near Armley Gyratory. Please visit the Leeds Baby Bank website to let the team know when you plan to arrive. If you cannot transport the item yourself, you can send an email to admin@leedsbabybank.org to discuss arrangements.
Other Ways to Help
People who do not have a pram to give can still help by purchasing one from the charity’s Amazon wish list for £63. Financial donations are also welcomed through the 'Ways to Help' section on their website. The team is also currently looking for Moses baskets and high chairs to support local parents. A full list of the items needed on April 24, 2026, can be found on the charity's donation page.
