Lidl has announced a major expansion of its surplus food redistribution programme, with 196 stores across the UK now participating, including 10 locations in the West Midlands. The initiative, run in partnership with Neighbourly and the food-sharing app Olio, allows volunteers to collect fresh produce, meat, and bakery items that would otherwise be discarded at the end of each day.
How the Scheme Works
When local charities cannot make late-evening collections, Olio's volunteer 'Food Waste Heroes' step in to gather surplus food before closing time. These volunteers then distribute the items directly to local families, shelters, and community organisations through the Olio app. The food is provided completely free of charge, ensuring it reaches those who need it most rather than being thrown away.
The expansion follows a successful pilot across 20 stores, which prevented an estimated 1,200kg of food waste weekly. Once the programme is fully operational nationwide, it is projected to redistribute 5,000 tonnes of surplus food annually – equivalent to almost 11.9 million meals.
Community Impact and Partnership

With our sights set on a nationwide rollout by the end of this year, this expanding partnership will soon empower communities to rescue up to nearly 12 million meals every single year."
This collaboration marks the first time two prominent food redistribution organisations – Neighbourly and Olio – have united their capabilities within Lidl's surplus food distribution system. Since 2016, Lidl GB has provided 50 million meals through its Feed it Back programme with Neighbourly, connecting every store to local charitable causes.
Volunteer Opportunities
Individuals interested in becoming Food Waste Heroes can register through the Olio app. Under the scheme's distinctive structure, volunteers may retain up to 10% of the rescued products for their own households, while efficiently sharing the remainder with neighbours in their community.
