Southampton Man Runs Brighton Marathon to Support Friend's Terminal Cancer Fight

Jack O'Keefe, a resident of Southampton, is preparing to take on the challenging Brighton Marathon this April in a heartfelt effort to raise money for someone deeply important to his family: David 'Budgie' Burgess. Budgie, also from Southampton, is currently battling terminal cancer at just 36 years old, a diagnosis that has turned his life and that of his family upside down.

A Devastating Diagnosis for a Young Family

On July 9, 2024, Budgie received the devastating news that he has metastatic lung adenocarcinoma and metastatic brain terminal cancer. This diagnosis has abruptly shifted his focus from everyday family life, work, and creating cherished memories with his two children, Harry and Harlowe, to navigating intensive treatments and frequent medical appointments with the NHS.

As a young husband and father, Budgie is now enduring the immense emotional and physical toll of this illness, including target therapy and other medical interventions. His wife, Hayley, and their children are facing this difficult journey alongside him, highlighting the profound impact of such a diagnosis on a close-knit family unit.

Fundraising for Private Treatment Options

In response to the limitations of standard NHS care, Budgie and his family have explored private treatment options that could potentially extend his time with his loved ones. These treatments, however, come with significant financial burdens, prompting Jack O'Keefe to step up and run the marathon as a fundraising initiative.

The funds raised will be directed toward essential private medical therapies, such as:

  • Intravenous IV Therapy
  • Hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy
  • Cyro chamber therapy
  • Recovery contrast water therapy

These treatments aim to provide Budgie with more precious moments with his young children, offering hope and support during an incredibly challenging period.

Community Support and How to Help

Jack's marathon effort is not only about raising funds but also about increasing awareness for Budgie's plight. Every donation, no matter how small, can make a meaningful difference in covering the costs of these vital treatments and easing the family's financial strain.

The campaign underscores the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis, with Southampton residents rallying behind one of their own. By participating in the Brighton Marathon, Jack hopes to inspire others to contribute and show support for Budgie and his family as they navigate this heartbreaking situation.
