Midlands Thug Dies Before Attempted Murder Sentencing

A Midlands man who admitted attempting to murder his girlfriend has died in custody just days before he was due to be sentenced. Lloyd Twells, 67, of Butler Crescent, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, died at City Hospital on March 5 after being taken there for treatment while held at HMP Nottingham.

Inquest Opened

An inquest into his death was opened at Nottingham Coroner's Court on Monday, May 11. Coroner Karen Boyle stated that a provisional cause of death has been established as an upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and metastatic transitional cell carcinoma of the urethra. Twells was identified by prison officer David Bell, who was on bed watch at the time of death.

Ms Boyle said: "In accordance with my statutory duty, I have now opened an inquest touching on the death of Lloyd Twells. This hearing now stands adjourned for the completion of further inquiries and will be resumed for a final hearing on a date to be fixed. I wish to express my sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mr Twells."

The Attack

Police were called to Butler Crescent at around 8.40am on Friday, June 27, 2025, following reports that a woman had suffered a stab wound. The victim, Lynn Carrington, in her 60s, was found injured in the garden of a property and taken to hospital. She had been stabbed by Twells as he chased her through her home.

The mother-of-six lost 2.7 litres of blood and spent 14 hours in surgery. She described how Twells stabbed her in the neck while she tried to hug him, then pursued her through the house shouting "die *****, you've got to go." She recalled: "He was looking at me and his face looked so loving and kind, so I walked into him and put my arms around his waist. He had a knife in the other hand and stuck it in my neck. I took a step back. He grabbed my hair and tried to stab me again. We ended up in the corner of the room. He kept trying to stab me and then I grabbed the blade. I sliced my other hand with it. He was saying to me all the time 'you've got to go'. At this point I just started screaming. I never knew I could scream that loud in my life." Twells also threatened to stab her dog and sliced his own arm after the attack.

Victim's Response

Twells had admitted attempted murder and was due to be sentenced on March 12, but the hearing was removed from the court list a day earlier. Ms Carrington expressed her distress at his death, saying: "I feel like I've gone through a nightmare and nobody's paying at the end for what they did to me. I feel cheated. I've got no ending in my head. I know he's died but he was dying of cancer anyway. It's not fair. I feel betrayed. My head's a mess. He's got away with it. He died in hospital, not in prison. I thought I'd get closure but it's all up in the air now. I was very upset when the police told me he had died. My mental health has now suffered. I get flashbacks all the time. I get very tearful. I don't like being on my own anymore."

In court, Twells had claimed that while suicidal, he was told by an imaginary woman named Jenny that he could not take his own life without taking Ms Carrington with him.
