Three trolleys of bedding plants have been donated to East Cheshire Hospice by the family-run Luke Brothers nursery in Knutsford, bringing vibrant colour to the gardens. The annual gift honours David Luke, who died in 2023 after receiving care from the hospice.
Family Tribute Through Floral Donation
Grant Luke and his sister Aqua delivered the flowers to the hospice on Millbank Drive, where a team of 20 volunteers from Barclays Bank were on hand to plant them. The Luke family have made the donations each year as a gesture of gratitude for the support David, 62, received as an inpatient and later at home through the charity's Hospice @Home nurses.
Grant and Aqua said: “It was dad’s wish to be at home surrounded by his loving family and that was made possible by the amazing care received from the hospice. We can’t thank the hospice staff enough for their care and compassion at such a difficult time for our family. We’d have struggled without their help. They did everything they could for our dad and were so supportive of us as a family during this time and after David’s passing. Donating plants is our way of giving back and I know the gardens mean a lot to patients and families who continue to use the hospice services.”
Generations of Horticulture
The wholesale plant nursery was founded more than 60 years ago by Frank Luke and his brother Bob. Three generations have since been involved, including David, his brother Andrew, son Grant, daughter Aqua, and nephew Michael. The family business continues to support the local community through such donations.
Corporate Community Support
A 20-strong team from Barclays has been volunteering in the hospice gardens for the past four years. The bank also makes financial donations to the hospice. Previous projects have included painting garden furniture and assisting with other horticultural tasks, including the planting this summer. The initiative was coordinated by hospice fundraisers and Jean Chaddock, the housekeeping supervisor.
Jean Chaddock said: “The plants are wonderful and we’d like to thank both Luke Brothers and Barclays. Their ongoing support makes such a difference, ensuring our gardens remain a place of comfort, reflection and beauty for all who spend time here. This project is a great example of the corporate community coming together in different ways to create an environment our patients, families and visitors to enjoy.”
