Opticians donates £3,500 to local sports

Specsavers Llandudno has donated £3,500 to local sporting events as part of its ongoing commitment to the neighbourhood. The opticians gave £2,000 in year-long sponsorship to Conwy Thunder, a wheelchair basketball club that offers inclusive opportunities for disabled and non-disabled locals.

Staff experience inclusive sport first-hand

As part of the partnership, the store team was invited to attend a training session to experience the sport first-hand. The local staff also took part in inclusion training delivered directly by the club. The store has also backed Strong Minds FC, a men’s charity football team. The club uses the power of sport to support mental health by creating a safe and welcoming environment for men of all ages.

Support for charity ultra marathon

Charlie Jones, optometrist director, and Lorna Helliwell, director, joined team members at the finish line of their Ultra Marathon challenge on Friday, June 26. They celebrated the achievement as the runners completed the fundraising event in aid of Ty Gobaith Children's Hospice.

Charlie said: "Sport has a fantastic way of bringing people together while raising awareness for important causes. We’re proud to support local initiatives that make a positive difference in our community, and it was fantastic to celebrate the team’s incredible achievement at the finish line."

Additional donations for young athletes and race

Earlier this year, the branch also donated £500 to a young karate competitor to support her participation in an international tournament in Croatia. A further £1,000 was given to support the running of the 2026 Deganwy Dash on Friday, May 29. The five-mile race across Conwy raised funds for children's cancer charities Young Lives vs Cancer and The Joshua Tree. The contribution covered the cost of the race’s chip timings, helping organisers accurately track results for 350 runners. Ms Jones finished 65th in the race while Ms Helliwell was on hand to cheer runners on and present trophies to the winners.

Lorna said: "We’re incredibly proud of Charlie for taking on this challenge and were delighted to support an event that brings the community together for such important causes. Both Young Lives vs Cancer and The Joshua Tree provide vital support to children and families facing incredibly difficult circumstances, so it was fantastic to play a small part in helping to raise funds and awareness for the work they do."
