Pembrokeshire Couple Row 3,200 Miles for Charity in Atlantic Dash
Pembrokeshire couple row Atlantic for charity

A courageous couple from Pembrokeshire are embarking on one of the world's most formidable endurance challenges, rowing across the Atlantic Ocean to raise vital funds for charity.

The Epic Challenge Ahead

Emma Gent, 53, an A&E nurse at Withybush Hospital, and her partner Andrew Ravenscroft, a joiner from Tenby, will set off on Saturday, January 24. They will row an astonishing 3,200 miles from the Canary Islands to Antigua in their 7-metre boat, named 'Donkey'. The pair, competing as 'Team SharkBait', will have no sails, motor, or support crew, relying entirely on their own strength and determination.

Training and Preparation for the Long Haul

The duo have spent months in rigorous training and meticulously sourcing the specialist equipment needed for safety during their two-month voyage. Emma, a mother-of-three and experienced Celtic longboat rower who has twice rowed from Ireland to Wales, admits this challenge is on a completely different scale. Andrew, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday in Lanzarote, is no stranger to tough tests, having previously completed Ironman events.

"We have spent time training for the last few months, along with sourcing and purchasing the considerable amount of equipment needed to keep us safe," Emma said. "It’s been a long slog, but we are delighted to be in Lanzarote at the start line, finally and excited to get going."

Rowing for a Cause Close to Their Hearts

The incredible endeavour is raising money for four charities that are deeply personal to the couple. They have already raised £5,845 of their £6,500 target. The beneficiaries are:

  • The Wales Air Ambulance
  • The MS Society
  • The Megan Starr Foundation
  • The Robin Cancer Trust

Emma explained her connection to the Wales Air Ambulance: "My daughter had an accident several years ago and although the air ambulance didn’t end up assisting, they were on standby to support. Having worked in A&E for many years, I have seen how much the air ambulance can do."

Mike May, regional fundraising manager for South West Wales, praised the couple: "The challenge 'Team SharkBait' has set themselves is incredible. Emma and Andrew are a brave and determined couple for taking on this remarkable challenge in aid of charities close to their hearts."

Emma, who had considered attempting the row solo after three years of interest, said having Andrew alongside has made the prospect less daunting. "To be able to share the highs and lows of this whole experience with Andrew has made the road ahead feel less daunting," she added.

If all goes to plan, the pair hope to celebrate their achievement with a well-deserved cocktail in Antigua a couple of months after their start date. The public can support their journey by donating via their fundraising page or by following their progress on social media.
