Redrow Eastern, a housebuilder operating across the East of England, has made a £1,500 donation to the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, a charity that supports teenagers and young adults fighting cancer. The funds, awarded through Redrow's Community Fund, will help the foundation continue its work providing practical, financial, clinical, and emotional support to young people aged 13 to 24 and their families.
Foundation's origins and impact
The Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation was established in 2014, following the death of 19-year-old Tom Bowdidge from a rare form of cancer. Tom's family created the charity to fulfill his wish to improve support for other young people facing the disease. Since then, the foundation has raised over £2 million to deliver essential services. Each year, around 2,600 teenagers and young adults in the UK are diagnosed with cancer, often experiencing financial hardship, social isolation, and disruption to their education or work.
The charity's Care Support Grants help families with costs such as travel to hospital, accommodation during treatment, food vouchers, clothing, specialist equipment, and other everyday expenses. The foundation also creates age-appropriate hospital spaces for young cancer patients and funds research into cancers affecting teenagers and young adults.
Donation's purpose
Lindsay Hurrell, fundraising lead at the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, expressed gratitude for the donation. "We are incredibly grateful to Redrow Eastern for their generous donation of £1,500," she said. "This funding will make a real difference by helping young people with the practical and emotional challenges of cancer, from travel costs to and from hospital for life-saving treatment to everyday essentials such as food vouchers, clothing, real-hair wigs, and IT equipment that allows them to continue learning and stay connected whilst isolating at home or in hospital."
