A retired building contractor has marked a milestone birthday by raising a fantastic sum of money to support a local hospital department. Euros Lewis, who lives in Ystrad Aeron, collected donations in lieu of gifts to raise £1,500 for the Diabetes Service in Ceredigion.
Personal motivation behind the fundraising
The generous pensioner decided to support the medical team because several members of his own family have received care for the condition. Diabetes is a lifelong illness that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high. The money was raised to support the local health board charity, which funds extra items to make patients and families more comfortable. This funding will help provide welcoming environments and advanced equipment that sits outside of core NHS budgets.
Euros said: “I wanted to raise funds for the service as family members have received support and treatment for type 1 and type 2 diabetes over the years.”
Gratitude from the community
He added: “It was rewarding to give back to the charity. I would like to thank everybody who donated, I appreciate the generosity.”
Paige Denyer, fundraising support officer, commented: “How kind of Euros to decide to raise funds for our charity this year in celebration of his 70th birthday. Hywel Dda Health Charities is incredibly grateful for your generosity.”
How donations make a difference
She continued: “The generous charitable donations we receive don’t replace NHS funding. Instead, they are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure, such as more welcoming surroundings for patients, families and staff, and enhanced environments for patients and staff.”
