A 25-year-old runner is nearing the end of the Scotland leg of an extraordinary 42-marathon challenge across Britain to raise money for his mother, who is living with advanced Multiple Sclerosis.
Epic Journey for Mum
Benji Wilkins, from Chorley, Lancashire, is running more than 1,100 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End in a challenge called 'Marathons for Mum'. He aims to raise £50,000 to support the care, treatment and mobility needs of his mother, Hannah. After setting off from John O'Groats, the fundraiser has already completed more than 400 miles across Scotland. He has run through the Highlands, Loch Ness, Glencoe, Loch Lomond, the Central Belt and the Scottish Borders. He is now approaching the Scotland–England border as he prepares to leave Scotland and continue south towards Land's End.
The challenge sees Benji run the equivalent of a marathon every day for 42 consecutive days, battling tough terrain, unpredictable weather and physical exhaustion along the way.
Hannah's Story
Hannah was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2019 after more than a decade of worsening symptoms and hospital visits. Despite years of decline, she was unable to access treatment without a formal diagnosis. By the time support began, she had lost most of her mobility and now relies on a wheelchair full time. She experiences daily weakness, stiffness, chronic pain and fatigue, and now spends most of her time downstairs at home.
Benji said: "Despite all she is going through, my mum takes her responsibilities in the home seriously and has always been the best mum any of us could ask for. I'm not an elite athlete. What I am is stubborn. This challenge is about showing my mum that she's not facing this alone."
Fundraising for Vital Equipment
Benji, who owns a magic trick business, hopes to raise funds for private treatment, mobility equipment and essential home adaptations not fully available through standard care. He said: "As Mum's condition progresses, there's a real possibility private care will become essential. Powered walking aids and exoskeleton technology could make a life-changing difference to her independence, while home adaptations would help her move safely around the house."
Throughout the challenge, Benji has been joined by friends, family members and supporters for sections of the route, while hundreds of people have followed his progress online. The challenge is also aiming to raise awareness of the realities faced by families living with progressive neurological conditions and the impact of delayed diagnosis.
Final Push to Land's End
With Scotland almost behind him and England now in sight, he remains focused on completing all 42 marathons and reaching Land's End in support of his mother. He added: "I've still got a long way to go, but every mile is for Mum. The support I've received across Scotland has been incredible and it's helped carry me through some very tough days."
Benji is documenting every mile online as he runs from John O'Groats to Land's End. To support the challenge or find out more, visit marathonsformum.com or follow @benjiwilkins on social media.
