Staithes & Runswick Bay Lifeboat Weekend: August 14-16
Staithes & Runswick Lifeboat Weekend Aug 14-16

The coastal villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay are gearing up for their annual Lifeboat Weekend, a three-day extravaganza of live music, family activities, and sea rescue demonstrations, scheduled for August 14-16. This beloved event not only entertains but also raises essential funds for the brave volunteers of Staithes and Runswick RNLI, who work tirelessly to keep local waters safe.

Every penny collected over the weekend will go directly to supporting the charity's local search and rescue operations, ensuring that the lifeboat crews have the equipment and training they need to respond to emergencies at sea. The event is free to attend, with a variety of fundraising activities ensuring there's something for everyone.

Friday: Music and a Traditional Nightgown Parade

The festivities kick off on Friday evening with a live performance by the Middlesbrough Jazz and Blues Orchestra in Staithes. Following the concert, villagers, visitors, and volunteers will don their nightwear for the traditional Nightgown Parade, a quirky procession through the village streets that has become a highlight of the weekend.

Saturday: Meet the Crew and the Homemade Raft Race

Saturday's action begins in Runswick Bay, where the public can meet the lifeboat crew and learn about their vital work. Meanwhile, Staithes will be bustling with fundraising stalls, games, and souvenir shops. The popular Homemade Raft Race launches from the slipway, offering a fun and competitive spectacle for all.

In the afternoon, subject to operational needs, a major lifeboat exercise will take place, featuring visiting search and rescue teams. This demonstration showcases the skills and coordination required in maritime emergencies. Later, a Fancy Dress Parade adds to the festive atmosphere, followed by live evening entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display over the harbour.

Sunday: Duck Race and Thanksgiving Services

Sunday morning brings the famous Duck Race, where hundreds of yellow plastic toys race down the beck, much to the delight of children and adults alike. The weekend concludes with special thanksgiving services held in both Staithes and Runswick Bay, offering a moment to reflect on the charity's lifesaving mission.

Colin Harrison, Lifeboat Weekend coordinator, expressed his gratitude: "Lifeboat Weekend is always a fantastic occasion for the village, providing an opportunity for people to enjoy themselves while supporting the RNLI and learning more about the work our volunteers carry out to help save lives at sea. Every pound raised helps support our lifesaving service, and we're incredibly grateful for the continued support we receive from the local community, visitors, businesses and volunteers who make the weekend possible."
