A dedicated supporter has reached an incredible milestone with his fundraising for LOROS Hospice, reaching an astounding £100,000.
For the past five years, Rob Owen, aged 42, from Thurmaston, has held an annual challenge, running 120 kilometres in 24 hours around the King Power Stadium, to raise money for the charity that cared for so many important people in his life. Accompanied by his friends Jake, aged 29, whose aunt and uncle were also cared for at the hospice, and Dan, aged 44, the three have clocked up 600 kilometres each as a result of their fundraising.
Rob said: “It was an idea born out of lockdown. I remember someone said that it was impossible to do – so I knew we had to prove we could do it. We had no real expectation of raising that much money but we thought we could raise a few grand. It’s brilliant – such an achievement.”
Jake added: “When my aunt and uncle were on the ward in 2022, I was a regular visitor to the hospice. The care and compassion they received made me want to give something back. I think we’ve done that now.”
The £100,000 raised by the trio is so substantial that it could cover the costs of LOROS’s day hospice for six months.
Camilla Barrow, LOROS CEO, said: “We’ve made no secret of the financial challenges that we’ve faced over the past year, and how reliant we are on our amazing supporters to keep our services open. Rob, Dan and Jake have been just incredible in their commitment to the hospice, and I’d like to say a most enormous thank you to them all. To put it in context, their support has paid for our day hospice to stay open for six months. It’s quite simply vital. They should be extremely proud of their achievements.”
