The incident occurred in the Newtown area, with authorities responding to reports just after 10:30pm on Newtown Row. Police believe the shooting took place in a park near Porchester Street, close to Newtown Row. West Midlands Police stated: "We understand how concerning this will be and we've increased patrols in the area." Officers are reviewing CCTV footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
Context of Recent Shootings
This incident follows a similar shooting earlier in July. On Wednesday, July 1, a 16-year-old boy was shot on Bowyer Road near St Saviours Road in the Alum Rock area. He sustained potentially life-threatening injuries but was later discharged from hospital after treatment. A gun believed to be connected to that shooting was discovered in overgrowth next to a skatepark in Geranium Grove, Saltley. A 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life; he has been remanded in custody. Another 17-year-old was arrested on July 9 on suspicion of conspiracy to murder but has since been released on bail with conditions while the investigation continues.
