Tom's Team Raises £2,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust in Peak District Walk Honoring Tom Mitchell
Tom's Team Raises £2,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust

The family and friends of a young man from Rotherham have raised nearly £2,000 for charity after completing a demanding walking challenge. The group, calling themselves "Tom's Team," walked a 25-kilometre route through the Peak District to honour the life of Tom Mitchell, who died in November last year at the age of 26 following a brave battle with oesophageal cancer.

Celebrating a Life in the Peaks

The Peak District held deep significance for Tom, an avid walker who loved the outdoors. His family recently scattered his ashes on Kinder Scout, one of the highest points in the national park. Even after his diagnosis, Tom remained active and managed to run a half marathon just months before his passing. His loved ones wanted to push themselves to complete the walk to match his determination and positive outlook.

Fundraising for Teenage Cancer Trust

All the money raised will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust to support young people facing cancer across the country. Victoria Keens, Tom's cousin, said: "No words will ever describe the loss of our Tom. He was the cleverest, funniest and above all kindest person and was always willing to go above and beyond for those who loved him. He was a friend to everyone. I have some of my happiest childhood memories with our Tom and I am forever grateful and will cherish them for the rest of my life."

A Resilient Spirit

Keens added: "When we found out Tom was ill with cancer, while we were all breaking, he was the one to reassure us that everything was going to be OK, even in his final hours. Tom was determined and resilient throughout his life, which is why he completed so many amazing challenges and walks in his short life, even running a half marathon a few months prior to his passing. I think we all wanted to push ourselves in this challenge because of how resilient Tom was in his final few weeks of life, so the Ultra Challenge was perfect."

She also noted: "He adored the Peak District and his ashes were scattered on top of Kinder Scout in May of this year." The group's efforts have raised nearly £2,000, with donations still being accepted via JustGiving.
