Dozens of colourful tractors took to the roads of Monmouthshire and Torfaen on Father's Day, raising £4,500 for two vital causes. The spectacular road run, which saw 95 vehicles form a convoy from Usk, also marked two decades since a record-breaking agricultural gathering.
Spectators Line the Route
Crowds of cheering spectators lined the roadside as the fleet set off on a scenic 30-mile journey across the countryside. Drivers navigated country lanes and climbed into Blaenavon before pausing for a well-earned rest at Big Pit, the historic mining attraction. Vehicle enthusiasts were treated to an impressive parade of classic machines, including vintage models dating back to the 1940s.
Highlight of the Day: The Record-Breaking Ford 5000
A special highlight was the appearance of a Ford 5000 tractor that originally helped break a Guinness World Record in 2006. The machine took part in a world record attempt for the largest tractor parade, and its inclusion on Father's Day added a sense of history to the event.
Decorated Tractors and Competition
Competition was fierce for the best decorated vehicles. Young Farmer winner Harry Yoxall decorated his tractor with contact details for mental health charities, aiming to raise awareness. The overall top award went to his grandmother, Rosa Yoxall, who adorned her machine with fresh garden flowers and scarecrows.
Raffle and Auction Boost Total
A raffle and auction featuring items donated by local businesses brought the day to a close, pushing the total funds raised to £4,500. The proceeds will be split equally between the MND Association (Motor Neurone Disease Association) and We Are Farming Minds, a rural mental health charity.
Organiser Praises Community Support
Event organiser Laura Baker commented: "We've been completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for this event, not just by the number of tractors taking part, but the spectators that have come to cheer on the tractors from the roadside. Clearly the event has made for a great way to celebrate Father's Day."
Baker added: "It's wonderful to see so many farmers and people from rural communities using the event to meet up and socialise. Farming can be a very isolated and lonely job. So, events like this help to keep spirits high, especially through tough growing and harvesting seasons like the very dry period we are currently experiencing."
Impact on Rural Mental Health
The funds raised will support the MND Association's work towards a cure and better care for those affected by motor neurone disease, as well as We Are Farming Minds' initiatives to combat loneliness and mental health issues among farming communities. The event not only brought in vital money but also highlighted the importance of mental health support in rural areas.
