Southend Woman Conquers Fear for Charity Abseil in Mum's Memory
An inspiring young woman from Southend, who harbours a deep fear of heights, is bravely preparing to undertake a 154-foot charity abseil in tribute to her late mother. Alena Grant, aged 24, will be descending the tower block at Southend Hospital on Saturday, May 16, as part of the annual Tackle the Tower event, raising crucial funds for the hospital's renal unit.
Her mother, Lisa, received treatment at the renal unit for many years, making this cause deeply personal. Alena shared heartfelt memories of spending significant moments on the ward, including birthdays, Christmases, and Mothers' Days with her mum. She emphasised that the staff not only cared for Lisa but also provided unwavering support to her and her younger sister, Charlotte.
A Journey of Courage and Determination
Alena's life took a sudden turn in 2023 when her mother, a single parent, passed away unexpectedly. At just 21 years old, Alena became the guardian to her ten-year-old sister, Charlotte, showcasing remarkable resilience. She stated that this abseil is a way to honour her mum's bravery and demonstrate to her sister that one can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
Reflecting on her experiences, Alena highlighted the fragility of health and the importance of hospital care. She expressed a desire to ensure no one feels alone during such difficult times, aiming to give back to the community that supported her family. To feel closer to her mother during the event, Alena plans to wear some of Lisa's clothing or have a special item printed for the occasion.
Raising Awareness and Funds
Beyond fundraising, Alena hopes to raise awareness for young carers and others who have lost a parent at a young age. She spoke about the profound impact of such a loss, forcing individuals to mature in unexpected ways. By participating in this abseil, she aims to keep her mother's memory alive through everyday actions and challenging endeavours.
Alena will not be facing this feat alone. Her partner, Jamie, also from Southend, will join her in the abseil, despite sharing her fear of heights. Jamie will be raising funds for Broomfield Hospital's Billericay ward, where Alena's grandfather, Joseph, was successfully treated for throat cancer. Alena praised the medical team's work, calling it miraculous, and noted that her grandfather, now a healthy 75-year-old, provides vital support in their lives.
Community Support and Event Details
Charlotte and Joseph will be present on the day to cheer on Alena and Jamie. Elise Fleetwood, events and corporate relations manager for Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, commended Alena's courage and determination, noting that such fundraisers help enhance patient care across hospitals. The Tackle the Tower event allows participants to descend the hospital tower block while supporting any ward or department within the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
Registration for the abseil costs £50, with a sponsorship target of £100. Places are still available through the hospital's charity website. This initiative not only raises funds but also fosters a sense of community and resilience among participants and supporters alike.
