Ronald (Ron) Miller, a resident at Hatfield Peverel Bupa Care Home, has recently celebrated a remarkable milestone: his 70th wedding anniversary with his wife, Patricia.
To mark their platinum anniversary, the staff decorated one of the care home's lounges and provided a cake to help the couple celebrate with their family. Ron and Patricia’s love story began when Ron was just 16 years old. They met at Haringey Ice Rink, where Ron was struggling to find his balance on the ice. Patricia kindly offered to teach him how to skate, and their bond quickly grew. The couple got engaged at 18 and married at 19.
After Ron finished his national service at the age of 20, they started a family. They went on to have four children, eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, with their extended family now reaching as far as Australia and New Zealand.
Throughout his life, Ron worked as an engineer and had a great passion for sports. He was a keen cyclist, a talented football player, and an avid gardener. The couple share many fond memories of buying their first house in Moulsham Lodge, Chelmsford, before moving to their family home in Springfield 13 years later, where Patricia still lives today.
Ron has been a resident at Hatfield Peverel for just over five years. Patricia visits regularly, bringing in her homemade cakes to enjoy with Ron several times a week. Until recently, the couple also kept up a beloved tradition of sharing a pub meal every Friday at the Six Bells.
Talking about the couple’s special day, Ron said: "We had a lovely day celebrating. We loved seeing our family and reminiscing over 70 amazing years spent together. All the staff did a fantastic job of making us feel special."
As a young family, they enjoyed caravanning and camping holidays across Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall, as well as a memorable trip to Florida with their children and grandchildren. In their retirement, Ron and Patricia travelled extensively. They explored France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, enjoyed a Caribbean cruise, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a grand tour of Australia, New Zealand, and the Canary Islands.
