A family-run gaming shop in Digbeth has fallen victim to a ram-raid carried out by thieves wielding angle grinders, part of a national crime spree targeting Pokemon card retailers.
Brazen Break-In at Griffins Gaming
Griffins Gaming on Rea Court was broken into on April 2, with robbers cutting through gates and smashing shutters using a van. Co-owner Michelle Bolton believes her shop was one of 'six or seven' similar raids in a short period.
"They brought angle grinders so they could cut through the big gates on the main road and then they ram-raided us, driving the van through the glass doors and through the shutters," Michelle told BirminghamLive. Police arrived within four minutes thanks to monitored alarms.
Stolen Goods and Damage
The thieves made off with around £80 in loose change and Warhammer products, but caused thousands of pounds in damage. The shop was forced to close for three weeks, missing crucial pre-release events.
The business, which moved from Erdington last July, hosts tournaments and sells trading cards worth thousands of pounds. Michelle described the 'insane' queues on release days, with customers camping overnight.
Community Support
Despite investing in top-quality security, the break-in highlighted the risks facing gaming retailers. The local gaming community rallied around the shop, offering support during repairs. Upon reopening, customers brought homemade treats to celebrate the return of their gaming space.
"Everyone was so happy to have it back," Michelle said, emphasising the shop's role as a community hub.
