Zeeshan Ahmed, 23, of Beaufort Avenue, Birmingham, has been banned from the roads for nine months after leading police on a dangerous chase in a friend's car. He had borrowed the Mini Paceman to visit his girlfriend and was not insured to drive it.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 15, when Ahmed drove dangerously along Aldridge Road, Birchfield Road, the A34 and Victoria Road to evade police. Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard he had only been driving for five minutes when the incident began.
Guilty Pleas and Sentencing
On Tuesday, August 25, Ahmed pleaded guilty to driving dangerously, failure to stop, possession of a class B drug and driving without insurance. He was given an 18-month community order and ordered to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activity days and 150 hours of unpaid work.
Ahmed must also pay £199 in total to the court. Judge Hayles told him that while there would be no separate penalty for driving without insurance, his licence would be endorsed, and future insurance applications would be "very, very expensive."
Defence and Consequences
Ahmed's solicitor, Mr Vesey, explained that his client owned a vehicle but had borrowed the car for a visit to his girlfriend. "He does have a licence with no points. He was not insured and was driving his friend's car. That's what inspired him to drive off," Mr Vesey said.
"He has perhaps learned a very steep lesson that when you have no insurance, you are better off taking the six points than driving off from police," the solicitor added.
The court heard that Ahmed's decision to flee police was directly linked to his lack of insurance. The nine-month ban and community order reflect the seriousness of the offences, with Judge Hayles warning about the long-term financial impact on Ahmed's ability to obtain insurance in the future.
