A bin man has revealed a common error that many households make when labelling their rubbish and recycling bins, which complicates returning them to the correct properties.
The 'Binfluencer' Shares Insight
Self-described 'binfluencer' Ashley, better known as 'No 1 bin man' on TikTok, has highlighted a widespread mistake that numerous households make, while offering a straightforward solution. In one clip, a viewer claimed that bin collectors never return bins to the correct house, jokingly suggesting they should consider including a postcode on them to ensure they reach the right homes.
In response to this, Ashley encouraged people to display their house number on both their properties and their bins so they can be paired up correctly. He noted that, on food bins, it's advisable to place them on both the lid and the side, explaining they frequently fall onto their side.
"But your wheelie bin, put it on the lid," he encouraged people, while demonstrating a bin with a sticker displaying the house number it belongs to. "Don't put it on the side, put it on the lid so no matter where you're standing, you can always see the number."
"And then they go back outside your house, problem solved," Ashley said. "House number, bin number, win win."
Public Reactions and Alternative Views
Nevertheless, people quickly flocked to the comments section to express their own views, as many contended it 'wasn't necessary' to include the numbers. One person recommended writing the numbers on the bin with a white marker pen.
In response, Ashley posted a follow-up video, in which he read out the comment before saying: "Or, you could do it correctly and write it, or you could just get a sticker with your house number and your road name."
"And then you ain't gotta make the same mistakes as this dude, and then you can have the correct bin outside your correct house," Ashley added.
Viewers Weigh In
Viewers were quick to side with Ashley, with many stating they preferred the appearance of stickers displaying house numbers on bins, rather than writing directly on them. "It looks tacky when people paint the number on the bin," one viewer argued, with many others in agreement.
Others went on to point out that not every property had a number, making the task considerably trickier. One viewer commented: "All houses don't have numbers." Another added: "Some actually don't have numbers they have names lol."
Final Advice
So, for the sake of your own peace of mind, as well as that of your local refuse collectors and neighbours, ensure you label your bins on the lids to help guarantee they find their way back to the correct property.
