Non-profit social enterprise ACH has supported 244 refugees and migrants in Birmingham over the past 12 months, providing vital accommodation and integration services. The organisation, based on Hagley Road, has enabled 504 residents to live independent lives across the city through housing, training, and employment support.
Record impact for refugees
ACH, originally founded as Ashley Community Housing in Bristol, works to help refugees and migrants build fulfilling lives in the UK. CEO Fuad Mahamed said: “The last 12 months have been our most impactful yet. For many newly-recognised refugees starting a new life in Birmingham, it can be extremely unsettling, isolating and overwhelming knowing who or where to turn to for the right type of support. We’re extremely proud to have been able to continue to help refugees overcome these challenges across the city by providing them with the right support at the right time, which is fundamental for helping them move from crisis to contribution.”
Programmes and success stories
ACH runs several initiatives, including the Bridge to Employment programme, which helps refugees and migrants secure jobs. One beneficiary, Kitty, obtained two job offers with ACH’s assistance: a paid placement with Pret A Manger and a contract role with Uniqlo in Birmingham. She said: “I want to fit into society, improve myself and get a job. I’m happy to contribute to the country and not just take from it. I started from zero, but now I feel much stronger and I’m really happy.”
