Bunches, the online florist headquartered in Birmingham, has been named Family Business of the Year at the UK Business Awards 2023. The company, which delivers bouquets nationwide, was recognised for its rapid growth and commitment to family values.
Award Recognition and Company Background
The award was announced at a ceremony in London on 15 November. Bunches was praised for its strong performance, with turnover increasing by 40% in the last financial year to £12 million. The company employs 85 staff, many of whom are family members or long-term employees.
Founded in 2010 by siblings Sarah and Tom Johnson, Bunches started as a small operation from their parents' garage. Today, it sources flowers from sustainable farms in the UK and the Netherlands, and offers same-day delivery across most of the UK.
Family Ethos and Community Impact
Sarah Johnson, co-founder and managing director, said: "We are thrilled to win this award. It reflects the hard work of our entire team, who treat each other like family. Our customers appreciate the personal touch we bring to every order." The company also supports local charities, donating over 5,000 bouquets to care homes and hospitals in the Birmingham area in the past year.
The judges highlighted Bunches' innovative approach to e-commerce, including a user-friendly website and a subscription service that has grown 50% year-on-year. The company's commitment to reducing waste was also noted, with 98% of packaging being recyclable.
Future Plans and Industry Impact
Bunches plans to expand its product range to include plants and gift hampers, and to open a second distribution centre in Manchester by 2025. The award is expected to boost its profile in the competitive online flower market, which is projected to reach £1.5 billion in the UK by 2026.
Tom Johnson, co-founder, added: "This award is a testament to our team's dedication. We aim to continue growing while maintaining the family feel that sets us apart."
