Fabrik Closes at Gracechurch Centre Again, Community Hub Planned

Women's clothing retailer Fabrik has closed its store at Sutton Coldfield's Gracechurch Centre for the second time in 18 months. The shop, which previously housed Topshop and Topman, has been occupied by Fabrik on and off since October 2021. The sudden closure leaves the unit empty, but the centre's new owners have announced plans to convert it into a multi-purpose community space.

History of the Store

Fabrik first opened in the former Topshop and Topman unit in October 2021 but abruptly closed in September 2022, stripping the store bare. It returned last summer, seemingly re-establishing itself as if it had never left. However, as of last weekend, the store has once again vanished, with all clothes removed and the space left vacant.

Plans for the Space

The Gracechurch Centre was purchased last November by Birmingham Property Group and SAV Group. The new owners intend to repurpose the prominent unit, located near two walkways opposite House of Fraser, into a 'multi-functional, community-led space'. Proposed features include a ground-floor café, a dedicated children's play area, and a community-led space on the first floor.

The vision is to create a 'hub for local events, gatherings and collaboration', aiming to strengthen community unity among residents. The owners plan a weekly calendar of activities for all ages, focusing on holistic well-being, with themes tied to key events like Easter, Christmas, and major sporting occasions.

Community Focus

John Southall, director of BPG Gracechurch, expressed excitement about placing the community at the heart of the centre. He stated: "Whether it be yoga classes, language lessons, or networking events, this space will enable us to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our community."

The closure marks the second time Fabrik has left the centre in just over two years, but the new ownership looks to turn the situation into an opportunity for local residents.
