Feedo Needo Cafe in Digbeth Offers Free Meals and Support to Those in Need
Feedo Needo Cafe in Digbeth Provides Free Meals and Support

While Digbeth is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, a cafe on the High Street draws crowds every morning and lunchtime for a different reason. Feedo Needo, located at Smithfield House between the Bullring and Digbeth Coach Station, is a community development charity where volunteers work tirelessly to provide hot drinks and meals to those who cannot afford them.

Supporting the Community

The cafe offers an open space with tables, chairs, and a large TV for guests to enjoy while eating breakfast. Produce is donated by major supermarkets, local businesses, and chains like Greggs. Beyond food, visitors can access regular sessions with hairdressers and hygiene products, thanks to volunteers dedicated to restoring dignity to Brummies experiencing homelessness or facing challenges in finding resources safely.

How to Get Involved

Every Brummie is invited to contribute through product donations or by offering their time. On Fridays, Feedo Needo volunteers pack goods for the weekly food bank, and a representative from Birmingham City Council visits weekly to assist service users in finding housing.

Addressing Mental Health

Gracefilled Okeke, project manager at Feedo Needo, said: “We see every day how closely hunger and mental wellbeing are linked. Sometimes it's not just about providing food, it's about offering reassurance, kindness and a listening ear. We want people to know that help is always available and that reaching out is nothing to be ashamed of.”

She added: “We support service users from all walks of life, with a core focus on ensuring they feel heard, respected and able to access the help they need. Alongside food parcels, we provide access to trained therapists, laundry facilities, haircuts and signposting to relevant health and support services.”

Mental Health Awareness Week

During Mental Health Awareness Week, specialists including student nurse Imaan Shah from University College Hospital London, student osteopath Manitabel Yeboah from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, and hospice nurse Sarah Shah visited Feedo Needo to offer support.

Sarah said: “Basic health includes all aspects of your health. So, if you're physically well, then mentally that helps as well. We're here to promote healthy lifestyles and overall wellbeing.” Manitabel added: “I think centres like Feedo Needo are important as contact time with people in healthcare, even if you're not given treatment, is important. People feel safe when they know that there is an environment they can go to.”

Imaan noted: “On a personal level, I think supporting here today is good for my own mental wellbeing as well as their mental wellbeing. It makes them feel part of a community and also makes me feel like I'm making a difference in someone’s life for the better.”
