Free Local Support Services Highlighted on Phoenix FM

Michelle Ward recently united two local organizations offering free support that can significantly improve people's lives. In the studio, she was joined by Tracey Johnson, clinical lead at Vita Health Group, and Phil Atkinson from Diabetes UK Brentwood.

NHS Talking Therapies: Accessible Mental Health Support

Tracey Johnson explained how NHS Talking Therapies provides confidential support for adults dealing with anxiety, low mood, stress, or panic. The service, in partnership with the NHS, is available to anyone aged 16 or over registered with a GP in the Basildon and Brentwood area. A key point she emphasized is that individuals do not need to see their GP first; they can refer themselves directly.

Alongside one-to-one sessions, the service offers preventative courses to help build resilience and develop practical techniques before issues become harder to manage. This proactive approach aims to support mental wellbeing early.

Diabetes UK Brentwood: Community Support for Diabetes

Phil Atkinson spoke about the Diabetes UK Brentwood Voluntary Group, which supports people living with diabetes, their families, and carers. The group provides reliable information and opportunities to meet others facing similar challenges, reducing the isolation often associated with long-term conditions.

The group meets regularly in Brentwood and maintains an active Facebook community where members exchange advice and experiences in a friendly, supportive environment.

Shared Message: Don't Hesitate to Seek Help

Although the two organizations focus on different health aspects, both shared a similar message: asking for support is never something people should feel reluctant to do. Whether it's mental wellbeing or diabetes management, local services are available, and individuals don't have to face challenges alone.

More information about both organizations, including how to access their services, can be found online. The interview can be replayed at phoenixfm.com.
