Mum Switches Accountant Career to Help 1,500 Families

A mother from Northfield has transformed her own experience of isolation into a thriving business that has supported more than 1,500 families across Birmingham. Julie Hetherington, a former chartered accountant, launched her TinyTalk baby signing franchise in 2010 after feeling 'isolated and overwhelmed' as a new parent.

From Accountant to Community Builder

Julie's career shift was driven by her daughter, whom she describes as her 'why'. The classes teach baby signs based on British Sign Language (BSL), enabling communication between parents and children before speech develops. Over 16 years, her sessions have become a lifeline for families in Northfield, Hagley Road, Bournville, and other Birmingham locations.

Recognition and Growth

TinyTalk has been ranked in the Top 100 Children's Activity Providers in the UK for the second consecutive year. Julie now runs eight classes weekly and plans to expand to nine. The classes welcome not only mothers but also fathers, grandparents, foster carers, and other family members.

'I also love hearing how my classes have positively impacted people's mental health after having a baby,' Julie said. The business offers her the flexibility to attend every school run and appointment for her two children, now aged almost 18 and 12.

Julie's story highlights how a personal challenge can lead to a rewarding career that strengthens community ties.
