New Quinton Food Bank Opens to Tackle Food Poverty

A new food bank has opened in Birmingham to tackle food poverty in the city. The Hub in Quinton officially opened its doors to the public on Saturday, May 16, at the Abrahamic Foundation, located in the heart of the suburb.

Dignified Shopping Experience

Designed to provide a dignified shopping experience for those facing the cost of living crisis, the centre is purpose-built to allow residents to pick up goods as they would in a usual supermarket trip, using a basket and browsing the shelves.

Nadiya Hussain, a trustee for the Abrahamic Foundation, said: "Nobody should feel shame for needing support. The Food Hub was created to ensure people are treated with dignity, warmth, and respect. This is about restoring human connection as much as providing food. We want families to walk into a space that feels welcoming and empowering."

Transformation of Former Sure Start Centre

According to the Foundation, the renovation of the area reflects its attempt to restore dignity and community spirit in the heart of Quinton. The site has been transformed from a former Sure Start centre, which had been left abandoned, into the current food hub. Today, it has been brought back to life as a space dedicated to supporting those facing the cost of living crisis in Birmingham.

Community Response

One Quinton resident, Bev Moloney, praised the work of The Abrahamic Foundation on the Quinton Community group on Facebook on Saturday. She wrote: "I have met some lovely people at the centre today who want to give back to a community they live in, that want to provide activities for children of all backgrounds. They already have a boys football team up and running and are starting a girls football team too, and many other things are in the pipeline."

Additional Services

The Abrahamic Foundation offers numerous services to the people of Birmingham, including street cleaning, young people's services, a homeless project, and domestic violence support. The food bank is located at 340 Quinton Rd West, B32 1PJ.
