Phoenix FM has officially completed its relocation to a new home in Thorndon Country Park, marking the end of a months-long process that began last autumn. The community radio station, which had been based at the Brentwood Centre for more than 14 years, was forced to find alternative premises after the entire site was earmarked for redevelopment.
From café to broadcast studio
The new studios occupy the former pavilion building, which previously housed a café but had remained empty for the past six years. Thanks to extensive work by volunteers, the space has been transformed into a fully operational radio station, and Phoenix FM is now broadcasting live from its new surroundings.
Moving a radio station is considerably more complex than relocating a household. Every studio, cable and computer had to be dismantled, transported and rebuilt without taking the station off air. Fortunately, listeners experienced no interruption to regular programming throughout the transition.
A scenic upgrade
The change of scenery is dramatic. Instead of overlooking the Brentwood Centre's bins, staff and volunteers now enjoy panoramic views across the country park. While the setting is a vast improvement, the station notes that squirrels are unlikely to make particularly engaging interview guests.
Such a significant move only succeeds with substantial support. Phoenix FM has expressed gratitude to Carolyn Peters, Fern Chadney and Louise McKinlay at Essex County Council, along with Victoria Smith at Brentwood Borough Council, for their assistance throughout the process. The station's volunteers also played a crucial role, with special mention going to Tony Smith, who spearheaded the technical relocation and reinstallation.
New opportunities ahead
The move represents the beginning of a new chapter for Phoenix FM. Being situated in the heart of one of Essex's most beloved parks opens up possibilities for community events, outdoor broadcasting and featuring even more local voices on air.
Listeners can continue to tune in via the same platforms as before: 98.0 FM, DAB digital radio, and online at phoenixfm.com. The station remains committed to serving the Brentwood area, covering communities including Billericay, Brentwood, Hutton, Shenfield and Wickford.
