Rainbow Buddy Benches Installed in Teesside to Combat Loneliness
Rainbow Buddy Benches in Teesside Fight Loneliness

Brightly coloured rainbow seats have been installed in a Teesside neighbourhood with the aim of encouraging local residents to sit and chat with one another. The striking initiative is designed to bring people together and reduce feelings of loneliness across the area.

A Welcoming Space for Connection

Community leaders hope the eye-catching installations will provide a welcoming space where passers-by can take a break or meet someone new. The seats, transformed by the town's newly appointed Community Caretakers, follow an idea proposed by the Friends of Linthorpe group.

Local residents hope the vibrant additions will brighten up the street while encouraging meaningful face-to-face connections. Organisers are currently looking into expanding the project to create more colourful seating areas in other parts of the town.

Local Voices Welcome the Initiative

Joely Dodsworth, a Linthorpe resident, said: “Our new buddy benches are awesome. They’re a refreshing antidote to loneliness, an issue that is increasingly prevalent in our community.”

Councillor Philippa Storey, Linthorpe ward member, said: “These buddy benches are a brilliant idea by the Friends of Linthorpe and I really hope the bright, artistic colours encourage people to use the benches to sit and chat for a few minutes.”

Expansion Plans on the Horizon

She added: “I’d also like to thank the Community Caretakers who have done an amazing job.” The project has already sparked interest in neighbouring areas, with discussions underway to replicate the benches elsewhere in Middlesbrough.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle social isolation, which has been highlighted as a growing concern in communities across the UK. By providing simple, accessible meeting points, the benches aim to foster a stronger sense of belonging and neighbourliness.
