A new monthly friendship group for older residents in Ripley is set to launch this month, providing an opportunity to make new friends over free cake and hot drinks. The community coffee morning, organised by Avanti Homecare, aims to tackle loneliness by creating a relaxed and welcoming space where people can drop in alone or with friends for a friendly chat and connection with locals.
Addressing Loneliness Through Simple Conversation
Annabelle Johnson, marketing and community engagement officer at Avanti Homecare, highlighted the impact of such initiatives. "As a home care provider, we see first-hand how much of a difference simple conversation and community connections can make to someone's wellbeing," she said. "This Coffee Morning Group isn't about care — it's about creating opportunities for people to get out of the house, meet others and feel part of their local community. We hope it becomes something people genuinely look forward to each month."
Regular Activities and Future Plans
In addition to complimentary refreshments, future meet-ups will include a variety of games, light activities, and visits from guest speakers. Organisers envision the group becoming a regular local fixture where attendees aged 50 and over can build lasting connections. The first session will take place on Wednesday, August 19, at The Brown Bear Café in Ripley, running from 10.30am to 12pm. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested via phone at 01773 477444, email at hello@avanti.care, or in person at the café.
Community Response and Accessibility
The initiative has been welcomed as a timely response to social isolation among older residents. By offering a no-cost, no-obligation gathering, it lowers barriers to participation. The café setting provides a neutral, comfortable environment, encouraging attendees to engage at their own pace. With plans to expand activities in subsequent months, the group aims to evolve into a vibrant community anchor for Ripley's older population.
